We created the exhibit as a project for a class
on teaching history with museums. The topic of World War II was chosen because
we spent two years studying WW II and the Holocaust through classes, a study
abroad trip to WWII historic sites in Europe, and a trip to museums in
Washington D.C. We were also inspired by
a visit with a WWII veteran and a Holocaust survivor. The focus on weather and geography merged our
interest in WWII with the museum’s focus on natural history. We wanted to
create an exhibit that was an extension of the museum’s mission and not an
add-on.
